Clark Kent, in the comics and on Smallville, loved Lana Lang yet Lois was the only woman he ever described as “the one” (his soul mate). On Smallville, after years of dating Lana, Clark still didn’t think anyone else, including Lana, was the one. He asked Lois in Instinct, “I know [Maxima] isn’t the one, but […] what if my soul mate comes along and I’m too blind to see it?” In Cyborg, Clark told Lana that he “always loved” her and “always will, no matter what happens,” which is true and doesn’t affect his love for Lois at all because his love for Lana endures even though it has changed. But when Clark finally saw what was true all along—Lois was the one—he was able to promise Lois that his feelings would never change because he had faith that she was it for him. Which is why it’s so poignant that instead of using the word “love” in his wedding vows, Clark spoke of belief, evoking his speech in Calling about love: ”There are no words for it. And when you have it you trust it, and you believe in it.”
